The Power of Music in Our Lives

I heard a story about a woman from a war-torn country who immigrated to the United States. She was in an LDS sacrament meeting when they sang: "Come, Come, Ye Saints." Tears streamed down her face as she exclaimed, "This is me! This is who I am!"

She was not a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She had not crossed the Great Plains like my ancestors, and maybe yours. However, she had walked her own trial of faith. She crossed her own "plains, mountains, and rivers," escaping devastation and clinging to the brightness of hope for a better life.

Inspiration from Our Ancestors

I was inspired to compose this arrangement because I grew up hearing stories about my pioneer ancestors. In my childhood home, there still stands the Pioneer Wall of Fame. My mother framed and hung up as many old pictures of her ancestors as she could find. In retrospect, this was kind of a terrifying hall as a child. My own children refused to go down it in the dark because of the somber faces staring back at them.

These stories of grit and determination were the center of my mother's identity. She was the most creative person I have ever known. She could take nothing and cobble it together to create dinner, clothes, and opportunities. I love her for this creative and determined spirit.

Reflections on Life's Journey

My father often said, "Why do they slow down when they start singing: 'And should we die before our journey's through'?" He would argue, "This is the best part of the song. If we get to go back to our Heavenly Father before the journey is through, it's a happy day. We shouldn't slow this song down; we should speed it up!"

In our lives, we all trudge through our own pioneer experiences. You may not sing songs about it. People may never know what you are trudging through or what you have endured, but you know you did.

Overcoming Anxiety and Worry

I used to be a ball of anxiety and worry. I think I was just born that way, and experiences in my life may have exacerbated my anxiety. This tendency, if not curbed, leads to cynicism and defeatism. For years, I had a quote from President Holland on my bathroom mirror that helped me change that mindset:

"He rebukes faithlessness and He deplores pessimism. He expects us to believe!"

Isn't that what this song is about? God recognizes the hard things in our lives. President Holland also said in the same talk, "Even if you cannot always see that silver lining on your clouds, God can, for He is the very source of the light you seek."

It has taken me many years to learn not to let anxiety and nervousness overtake me. I have learned to believe that through Christ, "All is Well." Whatever your pioneer journey looks like, take heart from the determined people of the past. Learn to see the good in your life beyond the trials and heartache. Focus on Christ—because through Him, "All is Well."
